I am working my way through this book at college, it is detailed and has handy tips to help you grasp the German language. It is one of the easiest and basic books to use as it shows you how to shop get food & drink to booking a room in a hotel and plenty more. I have had a few German language books in my time and think this one is great! If you want an easy book to learn with this is it. You can also go onto the BBC website and get working sheets to compliment the book.

Good for total beginners like me. However,I personally like grammar explained and verbs conjugated right from the beginning and this does give such detail.

This item was bought for me for Christmas 2012, I learned basic school German as a child and wanted to try and pick it up again. I cannot recommend this system enough, I've been listening to the cd's via my mp3 player and also with the book (try and get a version with the book and cd's it helps) and I am half way through it i.e. cd 1 finished. I listen to the recordings for maybe 1-2 hours per day and I think I could definetely walk into a cafe or bar in a German speaking country and not look like a total fool thanks to this system. Some of the grammer takes a while to get the hang of but that is more a flaw in my ability to learn than a flaw with the system. I haven't used any other format than this bbc version but I feel that if you are a total begginer or doing as myself and taking it up after a 15 year layoff, you won't go far wrong. I'm thinking of getting the next book in the series too as it is so easy to pick up. I think if you are more advanced you should probably avoid this and go for number 2 straight away or maybe seek out a class at your local college. Hope this review helps, happy learning.

This book helps you to learn German quickly and in a very communicative way! All four skills i.e. speaking, listening, writing and reading are being well practiced when doing the very interesting excercises. For beginners there is no better way of learning basic German!

We purchased the book and CD to back up the German for Beginners course we were taking one evening a week. It gives a helpful, basic introduction to the language for tourists and covers topics such as introductions, ordering food and drink, asking for directions, shopping etc. If you are studying on your own, we would recommend you also look at the BBC website. Either way it is a good buy.

Great way to start learning german... affordable and easy to use. Although I can definitely say it is a difficult language to learn... lots of effort is absolutely necessary... Help :-)

Found this book plus 2 CD's very helpful and I am progressing well with my German. My eldest son and family live in the German speaking part of Switzerland, so I will find this very helpful.
